Plate Boundaries Flashcards
What are the 4 types of plate boundary’s
Constructive, destructive, collision, conservative
What happens at a constructive boundary
Plates move away from each other, underwater shield volcanoes form here
What is an example of a constructive boundary
Mid Atlantic ridge
What happens at a destructive boundary
Plates are pushing together, if an oceanic plate meets a continental plate, the oceanic plate will go down into the mantle where it is destroyed. This is called the subduction zone.
Example of a destructive boundary
Mariana trench
What happens at a collision boundary
When two continental plates collide, neither of them are destroyed instead they buckle upward to form fold mountain
What is an example of a collision boundary
The alps
What happens at a conservative boundary
This is when two plates slide past each, giving rise to violent earthquakes. When plates try to move pressure builds up and is suddenly released as an earthquake
Example of a conservative boundary
San Andreas fault
What are the 4 layers of the earth
Crust, inner core, outer core and mantle
What is the volcano case study and when did it happen
Mt St Helens - USA 18th may 1980
What is the earthquake case study and when did it happen
Christ church New Zealand, 22 February 2011 (6.3 magnitude)
How many people died at the Christ Church earthquake and how many were injured
185 killed 164 injured
What volcanoes are at destructive boundary’s
Stratovolcano
Describe the outer core
Thick liquid made up of iron and nickel
