Plastics Flashcards
More information in booklet
What do most plastics not do?
conduct heat, conducted electricity and not biodegradable
Most plastics are…
Light, colour change, insoluble
What is a monomer?
A small molecule
What is a polymer?
Monomers joining up to make a large molecule
What is it called when monomers become polymers?
Polymerisation
What are plastics made from?
elements obtained in Crude oil
What does synthetic mean?
Not natural
What does biodegradable mean?
Broken down by bacteria and this causes pollution
What does thermoplastic mean?
reshaped on further heating e.g. polyethene for toy
What does thermosetting mean?
cannot be reshaped e.g. Bakelite for plugs
What does Addition Polymer mean?
polymer formed from small unsaturated monomers
What does burning plastics do?
Creates dense smoke and toxic fumes and CO is produced
3 ways to dispose plastics
Burying, incineration, recycling
Burying Advantage and Disadvantage
cheap, effective,
takes long time to break down
Incineration Advantage and Disadvantage
energy to make electricity,
toxic gases
