Name at least 4, 6 in the answers
What are the physical properties of a metal?
Strong, Conduct Electricity, Malleable, Ductile, Shiny and most are Solid
What does malleable mean?
Can be beaten into shape
What does ductile mean?
Can be pulled into wires
What is an alloy? Give an example
A mixture of two or more elements one of which a metal, being melted together. Bronze is Copper and Tin
What does finite mean and how can we save metals?
Will eventually run out and recycling
Name a battery advantage and disadvantage
A- portable, save
D-expensive, replace, dispose
Names a mains advantage and disadvantage
A-doesn’t run out, cheap
D- dangerous, not portable and uses up fossil fuels
Metal + Oxygen =>
Metal Oxide
Metal + Water =>
Metal hydroxide + hydrogen
e.g. magnesium + dilute hydrochloric acid => Magnesium Chloride + Hydrogen
What is the purpose of an electrolyte?
Complete the circuit and allows ions to flow
Where is iron extracted from its ore?
A blast furnace
What type of metals are found uncombined in the Earth’s crust give examples?
Unreactive metals e.g. gold, silver and platinum
What is meant by an ore? Give an example
A substance containing a high % of a metal ion
e.g. bauxite contains aluminium ions
Name these metals in order of reactivity: Cu, Pb, Al, Mg, Zn, Fe
Cu, Pb, Fe, Zn, Al, Mg
What do you have to heat copper with to extract it from its ore?
Carbon
