Plastic Manufacturing Processes Flashcards
What is tolerance?
an allowable amount of variation of a specified quantity, especially in the dimensions of a machine or part
Give an example of tolerance
A screw would have low tolerance because it needs to have a very specific diameter
When does tolerance usually occur?
In continuous and mass produced manufacture because it allows more products to be sold rather than wasted
What is injection moulding?
Injection moulding is a plastic forming process where you inject the heated plastic into the desired mould
Give an example of injection moulding
See Manufacturing Processes Examples: Page 1
When is injection moulding commonly used?
To form intricate shapes or mass production. e.g keyboards (intricate) or bottle caps (many)
What is vacuum forming?
Where a heated sheet of plastic is pulled onto a mould then vacuumed to suck the plastic onto the mould
Give an example of vacuum forming
See Manufacturing Processes Examples: Page 2
What is blow moulding?
Where two halves of a mould are placed on top of each other and then the plastic is blown out from inside
Give an example of blow moulding
See Manufacturing Processes Examples: Page 3
What is redistribution?
Sharing of systems and strategies to be used in the manufacturing process
What is fabrication?
Creation of structures by manipulating (bending, cutting, assembling) raw materials
What is stock form?
Stock form is unchanged, easily distributable materials
Give an example of stock form plastics
Plastic granules, plastic sheets and plastic tubes
Give an example of stock form wood
Wooden planks, Wood chips
