Plasma Membranes Flashcards
Why is there compartmentalisation in cells?
To keep reactions in different organelles seperate, as they need different environments to function efficiently.
What is a carrier protein used for?
Passive and active transport.
What is the role of cholesterol?
To keep the bilayer stable and regulate its fluidity.
What is the effect of temperature on membranes?
Increased temperature increases the kinetic energy of the phospholipid bilayer causing it to lose its structure and increase permeability
What happens when ATP binds to a carrier protein in active transport?
It is hydrolysed to ADP and and phosphate. This causes the protein to change shape.
What is pinocytosis?
The bulk transport of liquids into cells.
What is the water potential of pure water?
0 KPa
What happens when water moves into an animal cell by osmosis?
Hydrostatic pressure is increased and the cells bursts (cytolysis)
What happens when water moves out of a plant cell by osmosis?
There is a reduction of water volume in the cytoplasm which pulls the membrane from the cell wall. The cell shrinks and is plasmolysed.
What is the role of a membrane?
To separate the contents of the cell from their environment.
