Plasma Composition & Red Cell Metabolism-Goueli Flashcards
What shifts the oxygen saturation curve to the RIGHT?
H+ increase (decreased pH)
CO2 increases
Temp increases
2,3 BPG increase
**MORE O2 delivered
What shifts the oxygen saturation curve to the LEFT?
H+ decreases (increased pH)
CO2 decreases
Temp decreases
2,3 BPG decrease
*** LESS O2 delivered
Hereditary spherocytosis cause by?
-Defect in RBC cytoskeleton proteins
How is B6PG deficiency transmitted?
X linked!
What happens in cirrhosis and why do people get ascites?
Cirrhosis –> Damage the liver –> can’t make as many plasma proteins –> decreased albumin –>
–> decreased plasma proteins –> decreased oncotic pressure –> lose the draw of fluid from tissues into vessels
–> Ascites (build-up of fluid in the space between the lining of the abdomen and abdominal organs)
Acquired Methemoglobinemia
Causes oxidation of Fe2+ —> Fe3+
From giving BENZOCAINE, lidocaine, dapsone.
From ingestion of oxidates: nitrites, quinones, anilines, and sulfonamides
Tx: reducing agents (ascorbic acid or methylene blue)
