Q

Transport through the plant

Explain how water enters the xylem

A

Water moves into the roots using osmosis due to low water potential in the roots. Alkso when transportation occusr it creates tention pulling water into the xylem.

Q

Transport through the plant

Outline how water is transported from the root to the leaf

A

It is transported using xylem tubes. Tention created by transpiration such the water upwards in the xylem. Water is cohesiv with strong hydrogen bonds so it creates a trail up defying gravity

Q

Transport through the plant

Explain the process whereby water is lost from the leaf

A

Evaporation is where water exits the l;eaf in gas form causing nearly 90% water loss when traveling through the plant

Q

Transport of the plant

How does the composition of the transport medium change as it moves around the plant

A

1.First they load the sacrose into the phloem via the companion cell

2.Then water is added to the sucrose from the xylem tubes

3.The water sucrose mixture moves down the hydrostatic pressure gradient in the phloem tubes/siev tubes.

4.The sucrose water mixture is then unloaded into the sink via the companion cell and water moves back into the xylem via osmosis

Q

Transport of the plant

Explain why roots can be both a source and a sink of sucrose

A

Roots can act as sources of sucrose when they recieve excess sugars from leaves during active photosynthesis.

They become sinks when they store and provide sucrose to other parts of the plant during periouds of low photosynthesis or to support growth and metabolic activities

Q

Transport of the plant

Compare xylem and phloem tissue

A
  • Phloem uses active process of translocation and xylem use a passive progess driven by transpiration

Q

Transport of the plant

Explain why phloem and xylem tissue are found in close association

A

Because water needs to diffuse through each tube to move sugars through the phloem
