Plants Flashcards
What is photosynthesis
The process of plants making their own food using water and carbon dioxide using energy from light
What does the waxy cuticle do
Prevents water being lost from the top of the leaf
What do upper and lower epidermis do
Thin layers that support and protect the leaf
Palisade mesophyll
The layer near the top of the leaf so that the palisade cells get plenty of light
What is inside the palisade mesophyll
Chloroplasts/chlorophyll
Spongy mesophyll
Irregularly shaped cells that provide air spaces that allow gases to diffuse to and from the cell
Chloroplasts
Structures in the cells where photosynthesis takes place
Guard cells
Cells that can change shape and open or close the stomata to help gas exchange.
Stomata
Tiny holes mainly in the lower surface of the leaf where gas exchange occurs
Xylem
Vessels that bring water to the leaf and help in support as they have thick walls
Phloem
Tubes that transport the glucose formed during photosynthesis to other parts of the plant.
Petal
Attracts insects for pollination
Sepal
Protects the flower when it is in bud
Anther
Produces the pollen
Filament
Supports the anther
