Plants Flashcards
What supports the the flower and carries the food and water?
Stem
What dies the flower do?
It attracts insects for pollination so it can reproduce
What do the roots do?
They absorb water and nutrients from the ground and help the plant stay up right.
What is the photosynthesis equation?
Carbon dioxide + water (+sunlight) = glucose + oxygen
How do we test a leaf for starch to see if photosynthesis has occurred
Add iodine - if it turned black it has done photosynthesis
What makes the plant green
Chlorophyll
What does the chlorophyll do
Helps absorb lots of photosynthesis
What is the stomata?
Holes in the leaf to allow carbon dioxide to travel into the leaf
Guard cells do what?
Open and close the stomata
What is biomass
It is a material made from living things, it can be used as a fuel and will never run out (renewable)
What are the male plants of a plant?
The stamen is the main male thing containing the male parts of the filament and anther
What does the stigma do?
Sticks pollen to the stigma
Sticky stigma
What does the anther do?
Makes pollen
What is germination?
Seeds producing a root and a shoot
What is the independent variable?
Thing you change
What is the Dependant variable
Thing you measure
What is the control variables
Things you keep the same
What conditions do seeds need to germinate in and their purpose?
Water - allows starch to dissolve in it so the germinated seed’s metabolism is easier
Oxygen - allows respiration to happen
Warmth - chemical reactions to happen faster because of the more particles
What nutrients do plants need?
Iron - healthy green colour
Magnesium - makes chlorophyll
Phosphorus - makes the cell membranes and DNA
What ways do seeds disperse?
Water
Animals
Wind
Exploding
What does the waxy layer do?
Traps water inside the leaf
What is glucose
The plants food
What does photosynthesis do
Makes the plant’s food
What do plants turn glucose into
Starch
