Plants Flashcards
Correct order of the plants evolution
Algae/ancestor, Mosses/non-vascular, Ferns/vascular system, Gymnosperms/seed is naked, Angiosperms/seeds are covered and fruits/flowers pollination
Function of roots, stems, and leaves
Roots - Absorb water and is the anchor
Stems - Connect roots and leaves, transport minerals
Leaves - Absorb sunlight/photosynthesis
Function of xylem and phloem
Xylem - Transport dissolved minerals up
Phloem - Transport products of photosynthesis up and down
Function of stomata and cuticle
Stomata - Pore-like openings on underside, allow water vapor and gasses to diffuse
Cuticle - Thick waxy coating, protects plant from drying out
Female (pistol) parts of the flower
Stigma, style, ovary, and ovule
Male (stamen) parts of the flower
Petal, anther, filament, and sepal
Types of seed dispersal
Wind, animal, and explosive
Plant responses
Phototropism - Response to light
Thigmotropism - Response to touch
Gravitropism - Response to gravity
What is the function of the plant hormone Auxin?
Lengthens the plant cells (phototropism)
What is the function of the plant hormone cytokinins?
Simulate cytokinesis
What is the function of the plant hormone gibberellins?
Produce dramatic increase in size
What is the function of the plant hormone ethylene?
Cause ripening and is naturally produced by fruits
