Plants 1 (anatomy and classification) Flashcards
What are the 7 taxa?
KPCOFGS
Kingdom phylla class order family genus species
What is a species?
A group of individuals which are capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring
What are taxonomic groups based on? What are the characteristics that contribute to different degrees of similarity?
Based on degree of similarity
Morphology, physiology, genetics, cytology, biochemistry, behavior and ecology all contribute to differing degrees of similarity.
What is cladistic analysis?
A type of analysis that emphasizes objective quantitative data.
This led to\ cladograms which are basjed on DNA sequences (genomics)
Common examples of dicots (eudycots)
roses, sunflowers, lima benans, buttercup and basswood
Common examples of monocots
corn, tulips, lilies and palms
Features of dicots (6 )
1) two cotyledons (embyronic leaves) or seed leaves in the embryo
2) principal veins of leaf brancxh out from a midrib forming a distinct network(BRANCHING AT LEAF)
3) flower parts arranged in multiples of 4s/5s (FLOWERS 4s/5s)
4) Root system characterized by woody taproot with branch roots growing from it (ONE ROOT W BRANCES)
5) stem with vascular bundles in a single cylinder (ring) [SINGLE CYLINDRICAL VASCULAR BUNDLE)
6) cambium adds a new ring of wood each year or growing season (RINGS!)
Features of monocots
1) one cotyledon or seed leaf in the embryo
2) principal leaf veins parallel (PARALLEL)
3) flower parts in multiple of 3s (3S)
4) root system fibrous w no taproot
5) stem with vascular bundles complexly arranged in pith tissue
6) no rings annually
