Plantinga Flashcards
What does Plantinga say about faith and reason?
Religious belief is not inherently irrational or opposed to reason. He sees faith as properly basic- a belief that is rational to hold without requiring further proof or evidence.
What is Reformed Epistemology?
The belief that God is properly basic. This means that belief in God can be rational without being based on inferential arguments or evidence, just as other basic beliefs are rational. The belief in God is not irrational because it is grounded in the sensus divinitatis
what does PLatinga say about the problem of evil and free will?
Plantinga develops the free will defence. This shows that the existence of evil is logically compatible with the existence of an omnipotent and perfectly good God.Free will is a great good, but also makes evil possible. It is logically impossible for God to create creatures with free will who always choose good
What would PLantinga say about Plato?
Plantinga believes that certain beliefs can be a priori in nature. This alogns with Platos belief in higher sources of knowledge, however, he would say God gave us the ability to understand certain truth
What does properly basic mean?
certain beliefs are justified in themselfs without needing to be based on other beliefs.
What does Plantinga say about moral exclusivism?
God would not punish anyone unjustly. Gods judgement will be based on the individual. His judgement will be based on the knowledge and opportunities people had in their particular circumstances. Gods mercy extends in ways that we do not know.
