Plantar Fasciitis Flashcards
What is plantar fasciitis
Inflammation of the plantar fascia - can be uni/bilateral
Where does the plantar fascia originate from
Medial process of the calcaneal tuberosity
What is the pathophysiology of plantar fasciitis
Micro tears to the plantar fascia suggesting chronic breakdown of the structure
what are the risk factors of plantar fasciitis
Anatomical factors, such as excessive pronation or pes cavus (high arches)
Weak plantar flexors or tight gastrocnemius or soleus
Prolonged standing or excessive
running
Leg length discrepancy
Obesity
Unsupportive footwear
What are the clinical features of plantar fasciitis
Sharp pain across the plantar surface of the foot more sharply in the heel
what are the differential diagnosis
Achilles tendonitis
Morton neuroma
Inflammatory arthropathy
What are the investigations needed
It’s a clinical diagnosis
X ray only to identify plantar heel spur
MRI scan if uncertainty of diagnosis
What is the non surgical management of plantar fasciitis
Moderation in activity
Regular analgesics
Well cushioned shoe
Physio
What is the surgical management
Corticosteroid injections
plantar fasciotomy
