plant unit- different functions Flashcards
functions of roots
- anchor (structure)
- absorb water and minerals
- transport water and minerals
functions of stem
main function is to help the leaves up to the sunlight and conduct substance between roots and leaves
2 types, herbaceaous and woody
functions of leaf
- make sugars (photosynthesis)
- chloroplasts are in the leaves
- supplies other organisms with food and oxygen
What is transpiration
- waterloss through water evaporation from the leaves
- co2 and o2 dissolves in order for gas exchange to occur
- water evaporates when leaving mesophyll cells
- water vapour moves through spaces between mesophyl and stomata
what is guttation
water loss in the form of droplets through leaves
how does the water go against gravity
- sticks to the inner wallcreates a pullinf force on column of water
- column is many molecules held together by one
- pull that is needed comes from a lead pull process
pressure flow theory
- sugars are pumped from leaf cells into pleom-seive tubes
- through osmosis water moves into tube cells next to xylem
- creates pressure that pushes sugar through the phloem
- in the root, soluble sugars are moved out of seive tubes and into parenchyma cells for storage (sink)
What are bryophytes and how are the different from plants
- they are non vascular (mosses or liver worts)
- only live in wet environment
- have no roots, stems, or leaves
- rhizoids act act as their root
- each cell is responsible for its own sugar
what are hormones
chemical compound produced in part of plant that controls growth and activity
Stimulatory hormones
- auxins- cell expansion and plants plants response to light and gravity
- cytokins- prevent aging
- gibberation- controls seed germination
Inhabilitory hormones
Ethylene- promotes ripening
absidic acid-inhibits shoot growth and closes stomata
positive and negative to each tropism
phototropism
gravitropism +downward root growth - upward rot groth
thigmotropism +vines wrap around fence - petals close when being touched
what do the 3 numbers on fertilizer mean
- %of nitrogen- green grass
- % phosphorus- more flowers
- % potassium- hardness (to last the winter)
what is asasylitic acid (ASA)
casparian strip
