Plant Transport And Transpiration Flashcards
What is a meristem tissue?
It is a tissue in a plant that can differentiate into any tissue the plant needs
What is the function of the lower + upper epidermis?
Covers the surface of the leaf and provides protection
What are the adaptations of the epidermis
-large surface area
-contains waxy cuticle so that it’s waterproof
What is the function of the palisade mesophyll
To carry out photosynthesis
What are the adaptations of the palisade mesophyll?
Contains chloroplasts that absorbs light energy for photosynthesis
What is the function of the sponegy mesophyll
-carries out some photosynthesis
-allows diffusion of gases
What are the adaptations for the spongy mesophyll
-contains some chloroplasts
-has large air spaces and large surface area to make diffusion of gases easier
What is the function of the xylem?
To transport water and dissolved mineral ions around the plant
What are the adaptations for xylem?
Spirals and rings of lignin in cells make them very strong and help them withstand the pressure of water moving
What is the function of the phloem?
Transports dissolved food from the leaves around the plant
What are adaptations of phloem
-made up of living cells
-sugars are transported up and down the plant
What are the functions of a guard cell (forming stomata)
-The underside of the leaf is covered in stomata that open and close for gas exchange
What are the adaptations for guard cells?
-found in the lower epidermis
