Digestive System Flashcards
What is digestion for?
-large insoluble food molecules are broken down into small soluble food molecules.
What molecules are used to break down these large molecules in food into smaller molecules?
-enzymes
Name 2 functions of the mouth
-The start of digestion
-food broken down by teeth (chewing)
Name 2 functions of the oesophogus
-A muscular tube
-Food travels down to the stomatch after swallowing
Name 2 functions of the stomach
-A muscular bag
-Produces enzymes to break down food
Name 2 functions of the small intestine
-more enzymes added to finish digestion
-absorbtion of digested food takes place here
Name 2 adaptations for the small intestine
-Rich blood supply
-covered in villi (allows a larger surface area for absorption)
Name 1 function of the large intestine
-water absorbed from food into the blood
Name 1 function of the rectum
-where waste (feces) is stored before leaving the body
Name one function of the anus
-A a ring of muscle which prevents feaces from leaving the body until ready
What is the function of the pancreas?
-Produces enzymes
What is the function of the liver?
-Makes bile
What is the function of the gall bladder?
Stores bile
Where is the epidermal tissue found?
-covers inside and outside of the stomach
How does the glandular tissue aid digestion?
-they have secrete digestive juices
