Plant Tissues Flashcards
Name the parts of the plant
Waxy cuticle Upper and lower epidermis I’m Palisade mesophyll Spongy mesophyll Xylem and phloem Stomata and guard cells
What does the waxy cuticle do?
Reduces evaporation and lets light through
What does the upper epidermis do?
Layer of cells allowing light through it
What does the palisade mesophyll do?
Photosynthesis
What does the spongy mesophyll do?
Gases dissolve/evaporate on cells surface
Some photosynthesis I
What does the xylem do?
Transports water to the cells
What does the phloem do?
Transports sucrose to other parts of the plant
What does the lower epidermis do?
Gases enter and leave the leaf on this surface
What do the stomata do?
Holes which permit gas exchange
What is the most important structure in the leaf?
Palisade mesophyll
There are generally more stomata on the upper surface.
True or False?
False
There are generally more stomata on the LOWER surface
What do stems do?
Carry water up from the soil to the leaves/flower
Carry also carry sugar down the plant
What is the stem specialised to do?
Absorb water by osmosis
