plant tissues Flashcards

1
Q

describe the differences between the two plant tissues

A

-» meristematic tissues -
responsible for the growth of a plant
-» permanent tissues -
cells of meristematic tissues begin to develop and differentiate

Q

describe the different types of simple permanent tissues

A

-» parenchyma tissue
function -
photosynthesis, gas exchange and storage
structure -
thin, living cell walls with large vacuoles
location -
leaves, root, and stems

-» collenchyma tissue
function -
flexible support to growing parts of the plant
structure -
uneven, thick, living cell walls
location -
stems and petioles ( stalks of leaves )

-» sclerenchyma tissue
function -
mechanical support and strength
structure -
dead, thick, lignified ( woody ) cell walls
location -
stems, leaves and veins

Q

describe the different types of complex permanent tissues

A

-» xylem tissue
function -
transporting water and minerals from roots to leaves
structure -
hollow, dead celled tubes
location -
stems, roots and leaves

-» phloem tissue
function -
transporting sugars and nutrients for photosynthesis from the leaves to other parts
structure -
sieve tubes with hollow cells
location -
stem, roots and leaves

Q

define the vascular bundle

A

a cluster or xylem and phloem tissues in stems and leaves.
in dicot plants, they’re arranged in a circle.
in monocot plants, they’re scattered throughout the stem.

Q

describe the epidermal tissue

A

function -
protective layer for the plant, preventing water loss and protection against pathogens
structure -
tightly packed cells;
stomata - pores that allow gas exchange and transpiration / water vapour loss
guard cells -
control opening and closing of guard cells
cuticle -
waxy layer covering the epidermis to reduce water loss
location -
covers outer surface of the plant: leaves, stems and roots
