Plant Tissues Flashcards
What is a tissue?
A group of cells which are similar in structure and perform a specific function they form a tissue
What are meristematic tissues?
What is its function and where is it located??
Meristematic tissues are made of actively dividing cells. Their only function is to produce more cells leading to the growth of the plant body. They are found in all growing parts of the plant such as the stem, branches, and the tip of the roots
Name the 3 types of meristems
Apical,intercalary and lateral meristems
Name 3 characteristics of meristematic tissues
1.the cells are small
2.the cell walls are thin
3.the cells are almost without vacoules
What are permanent tissues??
Permanent tissues are a group of cells whos growth has either stopped completely or for the time being
where are supporting tissues found??
they are found on the surface of roots, stems and leaves
what are the three types of supporting tissues?
parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma are the three types of supporting tissues.
what is parenchyma??
parenchyma is composed of thin wall cells usually with intercellular spaces.
what is collenchyma??
collenchyma is made up of living cells that are elongated and thick at the corners or edges.
what is sclerenchyma??
sclerenchyma is composed of long narrow and thick-walled cells. these are dead cells
what are complex permanent tissues??
complex permanent tissues or conducting tissues also called the vascular tissue
what are the two types of conducting tissues??
xylem and phloem
what does the xylem tissue consist of ?? also state its function.
the xylem tissue consists of tracheid, vessels , xylem parenchyma and xylem fibres. it transports water and minerals absorbed by the roots to other plant parts.
old xylem forms _____________and does not participate in ______________________
wood, the transport of food
what does the phloem consist of ??
phloem tissues consist of sieve tubes , companion cells,
phloem parenchyma and phloem fibres
