Plant Tissues Flashcards
EPIDERMAL TISSUE
what does it do?
covers the whole plant
EPIDERMAL TISSUE
how has it adapted?
covered in waxy cuticles, which helps to reduce water loss by evaporation
PALISADE MESOPHYLL TISSUE
what does it do?
the part of the leaf where most photosynthesis happens
PALISADE MESOPHYLL TISSUE
how has it adapted?
lots of chloroplasts
SPONGY MESOPHYLL TISSUE
what does it do?
contains big air spaces to allow gases to diffuse in and out of cells
SPONGY MESOPHYLL TISSUE
how has it adapted?
large air spaces, increases the rate of diffusion via gases
XYLEM AND PHLOEM
what does it do?
transports food, water and minerals
MERISTEM
what does it do?
found at the growing tips of shoots and roots and is able to differentiate into lots of different types of plant cell, allowing the plant to grow.
UPPER EPIDERMIS
how has it adapted?
transparent, so light can pass through it to the palisade layer
UPPER EPIDERMIS
how has it adapted?
transparent, so light can pass through it to the palisade layer
LOWER EPIDERMIS
how has it adapted?
full of little holes called stomata, which let carbon dioxide diffuse directly into the leaf
