Plant Theory & ID Study Flashcards
Prepare for Mid-Term Tests - Theory & Practical
Name some of the common features shared by plants in the MALVACEAE family
- Funnel-shaped
- Campanulate (bell-shaped) as in Chinese Lantern
- Often pendant (hanging)
- Staminal column where the stamens are fused into a tube surrounding the pistil.
- Leaves are usually alternate and often have palmate venation with lobed or toothed margins.
- Genera includes Hibiscus
Name common features shared by plants in the ASTERACEAE family
- Any plant with a ‘Daisy flower’
- These are not single flowers but dense heads containing many tiny flowers (Botanically they are an infloresence called a ‘capitulum’
- There are two types of these tiny flowers (disc foret in centre & ray florets)
*usually female or pistilate
*Genera includes Argyranthemum and Cosmos - annuals, biennials, soft wooded and hard wooded perennials
Name common features shared by plants in the APOCYNACEAE family
- Trees, shrubs and climbers with most plants containing clear or milky sap
- Floweirng plants divided into monocotyledon and dicotyledon
- All members of this family poisonous to some degree
- Leaves simple, opposite or whorled
- Flowers in 5’s (calyx, corolia, stamens) with a superior ovary
- The flowers are often colourful and perfumed
- Genera includes Plumeria & Nerium
Name common features shared by plants in the CUPRESSACEAE family
- Display heteroblasty- Leaves are awl shaped on young wood, while mature wood usually has scale leaves.
- Plants that do not flower
- Evergreen coniferous trees and shrubs
- Cones are globose
- Intermediate leaves occur on wood that is changing from juvenile to adult wood
- Genera includes Cupressus and Chamaecyparis
Name common features shared by plants in FABACEAE sf. FABOIDEAE
- Pea shaped flowers (papillionate) eg Wisteria
- All plants in this family have fruits that are a legume (pod)
- Plants modified for climbing
- Many have nitrogen fixing nodules on their roots
- Leaves often compound, many have stipules
- Genera includes Wisteria
Name common features shared by plants in the RUTACEAE family
- add something about flowers
- Many species are scented, due to the presence of oil glands in their leaves and flowers
- Most members of the Rutaceae family suffer root rot and collar rot in poorly drained soils.
- Flowers are usually actinomorphic and bisexual, the calyx has 4 or 5 free or united sepals and the corolla has 4 or 5 petals usually free but sometimes united
- Genus include Coleonema and Murraya
