Plant Structure (Lab & Lecture) Flashcards
What are the components of a plant cell?
- Cell wall
-Cell membrane
-Plasmodesmata
-Rough/Smooth ER
-Peroxisomes
-Lysosomes
-Golgi
-Mitochondria
-Plastid
-Vacuole
What is the hierarchal organization of plants?
Cells -> Organs -> Tissues
What are the two different types of organ systems and their differences?
Shoot system: above ground; uses photosynthesis
Root system: underground portion; no photosynthesis
What are the three different types of plant tissue and their function?
Dermal (outer protective layer), Vascular (Transport of materials), and Ground tissue (site for photosynthesis)
What is the difference between annuals, biennials, and perennials?
Annuals: on life cycle (seed -> growth -> flower -> seeds -> die)
Biennials: 2 growing seasons to complete their life cycle
Perennials: live for many years
What are the two types of plant growth?
Primary growth: increase in length; cell division in apical meristem
Secondary growth: increase in thickness; cell division in the lateral meristem
