Plant Reproduction and Evolution (Lab & Lecture) Flashcards
What is the alternation of generations?
It is the life cycle of plants
What is the difference between a haploid and diploid?
A haploid has only one copy of every chromosome and a diploid has two copies of each chromosome
What are the differences between gametes and spores?
Gametes are diploid cells and reproduce asexually while spores are also diploid cells but reproduce sexually
What generation are nonvascular plants?
dominant gametophytes
What generation are vascular seedless plants?
dominate sporophyte
What generation are vascular seed plants?
dominate sporophyte (divided into angiosperms and gymnosperms)
Name the characteristics of an angiosperm
- female and male structures are part of the flower
- animal pollination is more common
- female gametophyte exist in the ovule
- double fertilization
Name the characteristics of Gymnosperms
- pollination by wind
- no double fertilization
- female and male gametophyte structures are on separate cones
- female gametophyte is present on exposed bracts of the female cone
Name the function of a haploid and diploid cell
A haploid cell produces sperm and eggs and a diploid cell produces the spores to develop into new gametophytes
What is the difference between dioecious and monoecious?
Dioecious usually depend on animals for reproduction and monoecious usually depend on wind.
What is a cotyledon and what are the two types?
A cotyledon is the leaf of the embryo of a seed-bearing plant, there is a monocotyledon (one cotyledon) and a dicotyledon (two cotyledons)
What are the 5 different types of fruit groups?
Simple. aggregate, multiple, accessory, and dry
What are the roles of plants?
Photosynthesis, food production, medicinal value, ecosystem, and bioremediation
