Plant responses - Miss Parry Flashcards
What is a Tropism?
And what is the difference between a negative and positive one?
The directional responce of a plant to a stimulus
Positive = Grows towards the stimulus
Negative = Grows away from the stimulus
What do Cytokinins do?
Promote cell division
What is the funciton of Abscisic acid?
Inhibit seed germination and growth
Where is intercalary meristem found?
And what occurs here?
Between nodes
Cell division
What is another name for the of tips and roots, that allow them to grow?
Apical meristem
How do auxins move around?
By diffusion
How are auxins broken down after they have been used?
By enzymes futher down the shoot
What is Abscission?
Leaf fall (loss of leaves)
Explain how abscission occurs?
Auxin production in the leaf tip drops
Cells in the abscisison zone become more sensitive to ethene
Ethene production increases due to the drop in auxin concentration
The increase in ethene causes cellulase to be made, which breaks down the cell walls of the leaf
So the leaf is seperated from the stem
Explain Apical dominance
The apical bud is removed, side shoots will grow due to the decrease in auxin concentration (which usually inhibits side shoot growth)
What allows stem elongation to occur?
Gibberellin
