Plant Responses Flashcards
What is Synergism?
When 2 or more plant growth regulators act together to reinforce the effect
What is Antagonism?
When 2 or more plant growth regulators have opposing actions
What are the 3 ways hormones move around in plants?
Active transport
Diffusion
Mass flow in phloem sap or xylem vessels
What are the 5 growth hormones in plants?
Cytokinins, Abscisic acid (ABA), Auxins, Gibberellins and Ethene
What is the effect of Cytokinins?
Promote cell division, delay leaf senescence, overcome apical dominance, promote cell expansion
What is the effect of ABA
Inhibits seed germination and growth, stomal closure when the plant is water stressed
What is the effect of Auxins?
Promote cell elongation, inhibit growth of side shoots, inhibit lead abscission
What is the effect of Gibberellins?
Promote seed germination, growth of stems
Ethene
Promotes fruit ripening
What is tropism?
When a plant grows towards or away from an external stimulus
What is the opposite of tropism?
Nastic response
What is Thigmotropism?
The shoots of a climbing plant such as ivy wind around other plants or structures and gain support
