Plant Responses Flashcards
1
Q
What is reflex action?
A
The body responding to situations without conscious thought- A involuntary response to a sensory stimulus.
2
Q
What are the pathway of neurones involved in reflex action?
A
Receptor - detects stimulus and creates an action potential in the sensory neurone.
Sensory neurone - carries impulse to spinal cord.
Relay neurone - connects the sensory neurone to the motor neurone within the spinal cord or brain.
Motor neurone - carries impulse to the effector to carry out the appropriate response.
3
Q
What is the spinal cord?
A
The spinal cord is a column of nervous tissues running up the back.
Surrounded by the spine for protection
4
Q
Describe the knee jerk reflex?
A
- Is a spinal reflex- neural circuit only goes to the spinal cord.
- when the leg is tapped at the patella (below kneecap)
-stretches the patella tendon and acts as a stimulus. - stimulus initiates a reflex
-causes extensor muscles (top of thigh) to contract
