Q

What is the role of neurones?

A

The role of neurones is to transmit electrical impulses rapidly around the body so that the organism can respond to changes in its internal and external environment.

Q

What is the structure of mammalian neurone?

A

Cell body- contains nucleus surrounded by cytoplasm.
Cytoplasm contains large amounts of ER and mitochondria which is involved in the production of neurotransmitters-chemicals used to pass signals from one neurone to another.

Dendrons- short extensions which come from the cell body, divide into smaller branches called dendrites- responsible for transmitting electrical impulses towards the cell body.

Axons- s

Q

Name the 3 type of neurones?

A

Sensory Neurones- transmit impulses from a sensory receptor cell to a relay neurone, motor neurone or the brain.
-one dendron- carries impulses to the cell body.
-one axon- carries impulses away from the cell body

Relay Neurones- transmit impulses between neurones. E.g between sensory and motor neurones
-short axons and dendrons

Motor Neurones- transmit impulses from a relay or sensory neurone to an effector(muscle or gland).
-have one long axon and many short dendrites.
