Plant reproduction Flashcards
Asexual reproduction
Only requires one parent and any offspring is geneticall identical to that parent, requires regular body cells, quick process.
Sexual reproduction (4)
Requires 2 parents and any offspring will have properties of both, requires specialized sex cells, slow process.
Germination
The process of plant growth, doesn’t require any sunlight and stops once the plant has grown leaves and is able to photosynthesise
What 3 things are necessary for germination to take place?
Water, oxygen and a specific temerature depending on the plant
What are the adaptations of insect pollinated flowers? (3)
Sticky pollin, colourful petals and nectar that is produced at the base of the flower
What are the adaptations of wind pollinated flowers? (3)
Small light pollin grains so the wind can carry them easier, large hanging anthers and filaments (wind - pollin), large feathery stigmas (pollin - wind)
What do petals do?
Attract incects for pollination
Sepals
Protects the flower when it’s in bud
Anthers
Produces the pollin
Filaments
Supports the anthers
Stamen
The male part of the flower which consists of the anther and filament
Stigma
The female part of the plant that recieves the pollin
Carpels
The female part of the plant that consists of stigma, style and ovary
style
Supports the stigma and the part that the pollin tube grows down to to fertillise the egg
Ovary
Contains the ovules
