Plant Nutrition Flashcards
Photosynthesis
The process by which plants make carbohydrates from raw materials of water and carbon dioxide, using light energy from the sun.
Photosynthesis equation
Written
carbon dioxide + water light (over) chlorophyll glucose + oxygen
chemical
6CO2 + 6H2O light (over) chlorophyll C6H1206 + 6O2
Chlorophyll
Absorbs sunlight
Glucose
Made during photosynthesis. Used as food for the plant.
Upper and Lower epidermis
Used to support and protect the leaf
Cuticle
Prevents water loss through the top of the leaf
Palisade mesophyll
Contains chloroplasts for photosynthesis
Spongy mesophyll
Provides air space so gases can diffuse to and from the plant
Air spaces (what do the allow?)
Allows diffusion of gases
Xylem
Brings in water
Phloem
Transports glucose throughout the plant
Guard cells
Opens and closes the stomata
Stomata
Where gas exchange takes place, not a cell itself, located at the bottom of the leaf in the gap between the guard cells
