plant organs Flashcards
what is an organ
it is a structure made up of different types of tissues that work together to do a particular job n a plant or animal.
what re the plant organs
root
stem
leaves
nn
SPONGY mesophyll - intercellular air spaces in spongy parenchyma allow for fast diffusion of CO2 and O2 for photosynthesis and respiration.
thin walled with chloroplast for photosynthesis.
WAXY CUTICLE - transparent waxy cuticle allows sunlight into the leaf cells for photosynthesis, protects leaf cells from bacteria, prevents loss of water and is waterproof.
XYLEM- carries water to the conducting tissue in the leaf vein.
UPPER EPIDERMIS - is a single layer or transparent cells that protects the leaf
lacks organelles therefore transparent allowing light to reach the cells below.
PALISADE mesophyll - thin walls with chloroplast.
LONG CYLINDRICAL CELLS (palisade mesophyll)- packed tightly in rows. the cells arrangement allow more exposure to sun than if it was round
GUARD CELLS - regulate the amount of water vapour lose by plant during transpiration, and allow the diffusion of O2 and CO2 fro photosynthesis and respiration through the stomata. control opening and closing of stomata
PHLOEM- carries food from leaf to other parts of plant
