What are carbohydrates produced in plants uses:

A

Converted into starch molecules, acting as energy stores
Converted into cellulose to build cell walls
Glucose used in respiration to provide energy

Q

Can plants be tested for glucose presence in photosynthesis? (Investigation of Need for chlorophyll)

A

No since they’re quickly used or converted into other substances and transported or stored as starcg

Q

Why is testing a leaf for starch relatable

A

Because you can see which parts of the leaf are being photosynthesised , they’re tested for starch with iodine solution

14
Q

What is the process for this investigation

A

-After destarhcing the plant for 24 hours, cover an area of the leaf with aluminum foil and place it on sunlight for a day
-area covered with aluminum foul will remain orange/brown since it did not received sunlight and could photosynthesise
-area exposed to sunlight will turn blue black proving light is necessary for photosynthesis and production of starch

16
Q

Wax cuticle

A

Protective layer in top of leaf, preventing water form evaporating

17
Q

Upper epidermis

A

Thin and transparent to allow light to enter palisade mesophyll layer underneath

18
Q

Palisade mesophyll

A

Column shaped cells tightly packed with chloroplasts to absorb more light, maximizing photosynthesis

19
Q

Spongy mesophyll

A

Contains internal air space that increase the surface area to volume ratio for the diffusion of gases (mainly carbon dioxide)

20
Q

Lower epidermis

A

Contains guard cells and stomata

21
Q

Guard cells

A

Absorbs and loses water to open and close the stomata allowing carbon dioxide to diffuse in, oxygen to diffuse out

22
Q

Stomata

A

Where gas exchange take solace, opens during the day, closes during the night, evaporation of water also takes place there. Most plants found in much greater concentration on the underside of leaf to reduce water loss

23
Q

Vascular bundle

A

Contains xylem and phloem to transport substances to and from the leaf

24
Q

Xylem

A

Transports water into leaf for mesophyll cells to use in photosynthesis and for transpiration from stomata

25
Q

Phloem

A

Transports sucrose and a,uno acids around plant

26
Q

What 2 mineral ions are important for photosynthesis

A

Magnesium and nitrate

27
Q

What’s magnesium function and deficiency

A

Function: Magnesium is needed to make chlorophyll
Deficiency: causes yellowing between veins of leaves (chlorosis)

28
Q

What’s nitrate function and deficiency

A

Function: Nitrates a source of nitrogen needs to make amino acids (to build proteins)
Deficiency: causes stunted growth and yellowing of leaves
