Plant hormones.- PAPER 2 Flashcards
Where is Auxin produced and what is it used for?
Auxin is produces in the tips of plants and controls growth near the tips of shoots and roots, in response to light and gravity. (Phototropism and Gravitropism).
When a shoot tip is exposed to light, what causes it to bend towards the light?
More auxin accumulates on the side that is shady and that causes the cells to elongate quicker on the shaded side, so the shoot bends towards the light.
What causes a shoot to bend upwards when effected by gravity?
More auxin is on the lower side of the shoot when sideways, so this causes the lower side to grow faster, causing the shoot to grow upwards.
What are the uses of auxin?
- Killing Weeds
* Growing cells in tissue culture.
What is Gibberellin and what does it do?
It is another plant growth hormone and it stimulates seed germination, Stem growth and Flowering.
What are the uses of Gibberellin?
- Growing larger fruit.
* Allow flowering to occur.
