Plant Hormones and Growth Flashcards
What do plants need to grow?
They grow towards sources of light and water.
What is a tropism?
A growth in response to a stimulus.
What is the name of a plant hormone?
Auxin.
Where are auxins produced?
The stem tips and roots. This is what controls the direction of growth.
What do plants need for photosynthesis?
Light and water.
What are the two different types of tropism?
Negative and Positive
What are positive tropisms?
When a plant grows towards a stimulus.
What are negative tropisms?
When a plant grows away from a stimulus.
What is phototropism?
A tropism where light is he stimulus.
What is gravitropism?
A tropism where gravity is the stimulus.
Where are auxins made?
Stem, buds and root tips.
How do shoots and roots respond differently to high concentrations of auxins?
- Cells in shoots grow more
- Cells in roots grow less
What happens if a root is placed horizontally?
The bottom side contains more auxin than the top side. This makes the bottom side grow less than the top side, causing the root to bend in the direction of the force of gravity.
What happens if a shoot is placed horizontally?
The bottom side contains more auxin than the top side causing the bottom side to grow more than the top side. This allows the shoot to bend and grow against the force of gravity.
How can plant hormones be used?
Weed Killers and Rooting Powder
