Plant Hormones Flashcards
What do Gibberellins do in farming
Cause dwarf species to develop bigger fruit (e.g grapes)
Causes stalls to elongate to make more room for fruit
What do auxins do in farming
Promote rapid shoot growth of weeds so they cannot support themselves causing them to die
If sprayed on flowers/fruit it causes ovule growth triggering more auxin production and seedless fruit.
What does ethene/ethylene do in farming
Inhances fruit ripening by activating enzymes to help the process
Can be used to help clone plants cheaply by dipping plant cuttings.
Where does the energy used in the initial plant growth come from when they are a seed with no leaves
Gibberellins stimulate the production of amalase which breaks down the storage of starch in the seed into glucose which can provide the initial energy to grow the first leaves
What are meristems
Meristemetic tissue allows the plant to grow back if they are cut off
What do auxins do in photo tropism
They move from the tip (where they are produced) to the side opposite from the light to cause stem elongation so the plant stem curves towards the light.
In a root they promote inhibition causing it to curve away from the light so they grow into the soil
What is phototropism
Stems growing towards the light
What is geotropism
Stems always grow up against gravity
Roots always grow down with gravity
What is chemotropism
How plants react to chemical s in their environment
What is thigmotropism
Plants growing around objects when they come in contact.
