Meiosis Flashcards
Homologous meaning
Chromosomes pairing via meiosis having the same structural features and pattern genes.
Stages of Meiosis
- Interphase
- Prophase (I and II)
- Metaphase (I and II)
- Anaphase (I and II)
- Telophase (I and II) and Cytokenisis
What happens in the interphase
prior to undergoing meiosis, a cell goes through an interphase period in which it grows, replicates its chromosomes, and checks all of its systems to ensure that it is ready to divide. (G1, S, G2)
What happens in the Prophase
During prophase I, the chromosomes condense, and the nuclear envelope disintegrates, spindle fibres form
What happens in the Metaphase
The homologous pairs of chromosomes align on either side of the equator, and spindle fibresattach to the centromere of each pair of cromatids.
What happens in the Anaphase
Homologous chromosomes are pulled by the spindle fibres to opposite poles. This causes genetic variation.
What happens in the Telophase
Nuclear envelopes reform and chromosomes uncoil. Cells then undergo Cytokenisis. These are now haploid cell.
What is cytokinesis
The division of the cell membrane and cytoplasm
