Plant Hormones Flashcards
What are plant responses called?
Tropsims
What is the response called when shoots respond to light?
Phototropism
What is it called when shoots respond to gravity?
Gravitropism
What is an example of phototropism?
Plant shoots growing towards the light.
What is an example of gravitropism?
Roots growing down towards gravity
What is the distribution of auxin if light is equal all around the plant?
Equal distribution of auxin
What happens to the distribution of auxin if there is light on one half of the shoot but not the other?
The concentration of auxin in the shaded part of the plant is higher
How does auxin behave in the shoots of plants?
It causes the plants on the shaded side to elongate so it grows in the direction of the light
How does auxin behave in roots
Auxin inhibits growth in cells in parts more exposed to the light, so shoots grow down towards the ground
What is the plant harmone ethelene used for?
Fruit ripening
What are the plant hormones gibberellins used for?
Increase fruit size
Stop seed dormancy
Promote the flowering of plants
What are auxin used for?
Weed killers
Rooting powders
Tissue cultures
