Plant Growth and Development Flashcards
What is establishment with perennials?
Ability to survive the winter
What are the three stages of seedling development?
- Heterotrophic
- Transition stage
- Autotrophic
What is an Inflorescence?
Inflorescence (seedhead), is a grouping of flowers within a reproductive structure.
Define Phytomer.
It is the basic unit of a grass plant. It consists of a node, leaf, internode, and axillary bud.
Define Phyllochron.
Amount of light required for a plant to complete a leaf growth cycle. Usually measured as a moles of photosynthetic photon flux density.
How does increase in temp affect plants growth?
increases cell division but decreases leaf length
How does increase in nitrogen affect plant growth?
Increases leaf elongation rate (LER)
How does increase in soil compaction affect plant growth?
Decrease leaf elongation rate
What does high site usage mean?
High density of tillers
What is tiller development potential tied to?
leaf development
What are the two types of leaf emergence?
- Rolled leaf emergence
- Folded leaf emergence
What are the two reasons for internode elongation?
- To reach the light source for photosynthesis.
- To get the reproductive organs higher so they can be pollinated easily and seed dispersal is easy too.
