Plant Disease And Defences Flashcards
What do plants use magnesium ions for?
Making chlorophyll
Give the chemical defences that a plant may have to defend itself?
- produce antibacterial chemicals which kill bacteria
- produce poisons which can deter herbivores
Give the physical defences of a plant
- Waxy cuticle which provides a barrier to stop pathogens entering
- cell walls act as barrier to pathogens make it again past the waxy cuticle
- layers of dead cells around the stems e.g. bark
What are nitrates needed for?
To make proteins therefore for growth
Give the signs of an infected plant
- Stunted growth
- spots on the leaves
- patches of decay
- abnormal growth
- mail formed stems or leaves
- discolouration
Give the mechanical defences of a plant
- Thrones and hairs which stop animals from touching and eating them leaves
- leaves that droop and curl when something touches them this means insects are knocked off
- mimic other organisms
Give a symptom of nitrate deficiency in plants?
Stunted growth
How does that prevent a tree from being infected with a pathogen?
It acts as a physical defence
preventing pathogens from entering the plant
What term is used to describe yellow leaves on a plant?
Chlorosis
Explain why plants with magnesium deficiency Are less able to photosynthesise
Magnesium is needed for making chlorophyll which is needed for photosynthesis
