Plant Defences Flashcards
1
Q
List some physical plant defences
A
Waxy Cuticle
Cell wall
2
Q
How does the cell wall act as a physical defence?
A
Acts as a structural barrier for any pathogens
3
Q
How does the cuticle act as a physical barrier?
A
The waxy cuticle is on top of the epidermis cells, preventing pathogens from directly contacting the epidermal cells
Hydrophobic nature of cuticle prevents water from accumulating. This prevents fungal pathogens from growing as they require standing water for spore germination
4
Q
What are some examples of plant chemical defences?
A
Insect repellant Insecticides Antibacterial compounds Anti fungal compounds Cyanide
5
Q
How is cyanide an effective plant defence?
A
Is toxic to most living things
