Plant Classification Flashcards
What is a plant defined as? 2 other characteristics?
Plant = eukaryote w cell walls that do photosynthesis
Multicellular and autotrophic (make their own food)
Vascular vs non-vascular plants?
Vascular: contain water, xylem and phloem
Non-vascular: basically any water plant (ie algae), cells must each directly absorb nutrients.
Botanical vs descriptive classification?
Botanical: physical (scientific)
Descriptive: by use and life cycle
Order of botanical classification? (7)
Kingdom
Phylum/division
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
What is binomial nomenclature?
What’s the branch/job name?
Who invented it?
2-part plant/animal name requiring genus and specific epithet
Taxonomy/taxonomists
Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus
Benefits of binomial nomenclature?
Universal and clearly IDs a plant species
Varieties vs cultivars?
Varieties: naturally occuring mutation
Cultivar: human-made or maintained
Gymnosperms vs angiosperms?
Gym: cone bearing
Angio: flowering plant
Monocotyledons vs dicotyledons
Mono: 1 seed, parallel leaf veins, hairy root system, 3-part flowers (ie wheat, grass,)
Di: 2 seed, vein network, 4-5 part flowers, have 1 main root with a bunch of branches.
