Cells Flashcards
Prokaryotes vs eukaryotes
Pro: lack nucleus (ie bacteria and archaea)
Eu: have nucleus
Normal Flora, indigenous microbiota, probiotics
Normal/indigenous: bacteria naturally on or in you
Probiotics: microorganisms ingested for health
What is a virus/virion? Are they alive?
Virus = DNA/RNA inside protein coating. Not alive as they can’t reproduce on their own.
What is a cell? How are they structured? Note about structure?
Cell: smallest living thing
Membrane surrounding biomolecules
All cells have common structure
Mitochondria, cytoplasm, Golgi apparatus
Mito: make ATP energy through respiration
Cytoplasm: cell goo for shape and containing cell parts
Golgi apparatus: lipid/protein dealer (makes/stores/transports)
Ribosomes and ER (rough/smooth)
Ribosomes: in rough ER, help w protein synthesis
Rough ER: protein synthesis
Smooth ER: lipid processing
Difference between plant and animal cells? (2 organelles)
- cell wall, made of cellulose
- Chloroplasts, for photosynthesis
