Plant cells: yr 9 Flashcards
What three things do plant cells have, but not animal cells?
- vacuole
- cell wall
- chloroplasts
What is the function of the vacuole?
The vacuole is filled with water and is separated from the cytoplasm of the cell by a membrane. The vacuole also helps keep the shape of the cell.
What are chloroplasts?
Green disc shaped organelles where the chemical reactions of photosynthesis occur. The chloroplast is green N because of a pigment, chlorophyll. It is easily seen under a microscope. Some cells of the plant don’t contain chloroplasts eg. Roots, beacause they are underground so can’t photosynthesise.
What is the cell wall?
This surrounds the plant cell. It provides the cell protection and helps keep the structure of the cell. It is easy to see it under a microscope.
