Plant Cells Flashcards
To learn about plant cells and transpiration
What is transpiration
The evapouration of waterr at the surfaces of the spongy mesophyll cells in the leaves followed by the loss of water vapour through the stomata
What do the root hair cells do
Absorb water and minerals for the plant from the soil
What does the xylem do
Takes up water and mineral ions through transpiration
What does the phloem do
Takes up food substances such as glucose throughout the plant for use or for storage through translocation
What are some factors which effect transpiration
Air movement
Surface area
Light
What are a few functions of transpiration
Transporting mineral ions
Providing water to keep the cell turgid to support the plant
Providing water for photosynthesis
Keeps the leaves cool by evapouration
What do the guard cells do
They optimise leaf gas exchange
What does the palisade mesophyll do
Absorbs light, has lots of chloroplast
What transport do root hair cells use to take up water and vital minerals from the soil
Active transport
