Plant Cell Specialisation Flashcards
Palisade cells host most photosynthesis.
Many chloroplasts, packed vertically, just below leaf top surface.
Storage cells store glucose as starch.
Have starch grains.
Epidermal cells protect cells inside the leaf.
Form a continuous covering, stronger cell walls.
Guard cells open and close stomata.
Control stoma, thick in and thin out membrane.
Xylem cells transport water throughout the plant and provide mechanical storage.
Lose end cell walls to form continuous hollow tube.
Phloem cells transport carbohydrates throughout the plant.
Lose end cell walls to form continuous hollow sieve tube. No nuclei for extra space.
Root hair cells absorb water and minerals from soil.
Large surface area with many hair like growths.
Parenchyma cells are the bulk of vascular plant tissue.
Thin walls, alive at maturity.
Spongy mesophyll cells interchange carbon dioxide for photosynthesis.
Covered in thin water layer, gasses dissolve as they pass.
