Functions of Sub-Cellular Structures Flashcards
Nucleus
Contain genetic material that controls the cell activity.
Cell Membrane
Hold the cell together and control what goes in and out.
Cytoplasm
A gel-like substance where most chemical reactions take place. Contains enzymes that control these.
Mitochondria
Where most aerobic respiration reactions occur.
Ribosomes
Where the second stage of protein synthesis takes place.
Chloroplasts
Contain chlorophyll (a green pigment) to absorb sunlight for photosynthesis (which they host).
Cell Wall
Rigid cellulose (plants) / peptidoglycan (bacteria) structure, strengthening and supporting the cell.
Vacuole
Contain cell sap, maintaining internal pressure to support the cell.
Chromosomal DNA
Control cell activity and replication.
Plasmid DNA
Contain genes that can be passed between bacteria, things like drug resistance.
Flagellum
Hair-like structure rotating for movement.
