Plant Cell Organelles Flashcards
What is the purpose of the nucleus?
It controls the cell’s activity and contains genetic material such as DNA.
What is the purpose of the mitochondria?
It is the powerhouse of the cell and it is where most of the energy is released in respiration.
What is the purpose of the vacuole?
It helps keep the plant cell turgid (swollen) and it is filled with cell sap.
What is the purpose of the cytoplasm?
It is where many of the chemical reactions happen and it contains dissolved nutrients and salts.
What is the purpose of the Golgi complex?
It processes and packages proteins and lipids.
What is the purpose of the rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER)?
It is responsible for the production, folding, quality control and dispatch of proteins
What is the purpose of the lysosome?
It digests large molecules using enzymes and is a key part of cell metabolism (the sum of all processes in the cell).
What is the purpose of the cell wall?
It strengthens and supports the plant and is made from cellulose fibers.
What is the purpose of the cell membrane?
It controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell.
What is the purpose of the chloroplast?
It contains the green pigment (chlorophyll) that makes a plant its color and it absorbs light for photosynthesis, as photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts.
What is the purpose of the peroxisome?
It oxidizes specific biomolecules within the cell.
What is the purpose of the ribosome?
It creates proteins and amino acids and is often attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum.
What is the purpose of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (ER)?
It produces lipids and hormones.
What is the purpose of the nucleolus?
It produces and assembles the cells ribosomes.
What is the purpose of the nuclear membrane?
It seperates the nucleus from the cytoplasm of the cell.
