Animal Cells Flashcards
What is the purpose of the nucleus?
It controls the cell’s activity and contains genetic material, such as DNA.
What is the purpose of the mitochondria?
It is the powerhouse of the cell and is where most of the energy is released in respiration.
What is the purpose of the vacuole?
It stores nutrients, water, and cell wastes.
What is the purpose of the cytoplasm?
It is where many of the chemical reactions happen and it contains dissolved nutrients and salts.
What is the purpose of the Golgi complex?
It processes and packages proteins into vesicles (small cellular containers).
What is the purpose of the ribosome?
It synthesizes all of the proteins in the cell.
What is the purpose of the rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER)?
It produces, folds, checks for quality, and dispatches proteins
What is the purpose of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (ER)?
It produces lipids and hormones.
What is the purpose of the lysosome?
It digests large molecules using enzymes and is a key part of cell metabolism.
What is the purpose of the cell membrane?
It controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell.
What is the purpose of the centriole?
It aids in cell division and maintains cell structure and intra-cellular transport systems.
What is the purpose of the nucleolus?
It produces ribosomes and synthesizes proteins.
What is the purpose of the nuclear membrane?
It separates the nucleus from the cytoplasm.
What is the purpose of the peroxisome?
It carries out oxidative reactions using molecular oxygen.
