What are cereals, give examples
Cereals are grasses, edible grain.
- wheat, maize, rice, sorghum
What are grains, give examples
Plants that produce small hard seeds.
- wheat, beans, soybeans
What are pulses, give examples
Legumes, grown for their high protein content.
- soybeans, peanut, cow peas
What are forages, give examples
Crops grown for livestock feed. Two types:
- Sillage: fermented high moisture fodder. Crops used for this are grasses, clover, alfalfa, oats, rye, maize
- Hay: Dried plants that are cut, dried and stored. Crops used are grass, legumes.
what are Fiber crop, give examples
Used for their fibre, to make clothing, tope, paper. Examples are hemp, cotton, flax
what are root & tubers, give examples
Underground crops (storage part of plant) which are often high in starch.
Roots: Sweet potato, cassava
Tubers: Irish potato
Cover crops
prevent soil erosion
Companion crops
pest control, pollination, habitat for beneficial creatures
Green manure
Incorporated to the soil to improve soil quality
