Plant Biology Flashcards
Palisade mesophyll means
Most photosynthesis occurs here, cells all packed with full of chloroplasts.
Epidermis means
Protects leaf, stops bacteria and viruses entering the leaf
Spongy mesophyll means
Some photosynthesis occurs here, less chloroplasts than palisade, allows easy movement of gases
Vein means
Carries water in xylem and food in phloem
Guard cells mean
Increase and decrease in size to control the size of the stomata
Stomata means
Small pores, allow gases in and out of the leaf and how water is lost from the leaf. There are more stomata on the lower side of the leaf.
Germination means
Breaking open the seed coat and the development of the stem and root.
What do root hair cells do
Create a huge surface area for water and mineral absorption.
Photosynthesis is
How green plants make their own food (glucose) by using Carbon dioxide and water.
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Light
Carbon Dioxide + Water —> Glucose + Oxygen
Chlorophyll
What is Hydrogen Carbonate Indicator used for?
To detect the levels of Carbon Dioxide.
What do plants need water for?
To hold them up (support them) and for photosynthesis
Transpiration is
Evaporation of water out through the stomata.
What does the plant need Stomata for?
To allow the gases carbon dioxide and oxygen in and out.
What do the guard cells do?
Open and close the stomata
What are the environmental conditions needed for germination?
oxygen
moisture
heat
what are the environmental conditions need for healthy seed growth?
oxygen
moisture
heat
light
what are the advantages of leaves?
large surface area to absorb sunlight for photosynthesis
what are the advantages of the stem?
transports water and minerals up the plant to the leaves and sugars (made in photosynthesis) up and down the plant
what are the advantages of roots?
large surface area (root hair cells) to absorb minerals and water from the soil.
plants need calcium to
produce new cell walls
plants need magnesium to
to make chlorophyll
plants need nitrogen ( in the form of nitrates) to
produce protein for growth
where are most stomata found
on the underside of the leaf
