All living things need food.
Food is divided into how many nutrient groups?
Seven
The seven nutrient groups are:-
Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats, Vitamins, Minerals, Water and Fibre
In order to remain healthy a person must eat what?
A balanced diet
What is a balanced diet?
Eating the correct amount from each of the 7 nutrient groups to suit an individual lifestyle.
What is malnutrition?
An unbalanced diet resulting from not eating enough or eating too much of a particular nutrient group.
How much of the world’s population is malnourished?
Approximately two thirds of the world’s population
What is starvation?
This is when an individual does not eat enough of any food.
Starvation causes what?
Tiredness and wasting diseases
Where in the world is starvation most common?
In developing countries
What happens to individuals who take in too much energy either by eating too much or eating the wrong type of food?
They become obese
Name one health related disadvantage of being obese (carrying extra weight)?
The individual would be more at risk of suffering a heart attack because the heart has to work harder to pump blood to tissue therefore putting a strain on the heart.
Name two good sources of carbohydrate?
Sugars and starch
In what food or drink would we find carbohydrate in the form of sugar?
Lactose from milk and sugars from natural fruit
In what foods or drinks would we find carbohydrate in the form of starch?
Rice, potato and pasta.
Carbohydrates provide the body with what?
Energy
If an individual is deficient in the carbohydrate nutrient group what could it cause?
Starvation or malnutrition
What foods provide a good source of protein?
Chicken, fish and beans.
Why is protein important to our bodies?
Growth and repair
If you are deficient in protein what disease can you get?
Kwashiorkor
Name some food sources from the fat nutrient group
Fried foods, bacon and butter
What does the fat nutrient group provide the body with?
Energy and insulation (warmth)
Name two types of minerals required by the body?
Calcium and iron
What foods or drinks are a good source of calcium?
Milk and cheese
What foods or drinks are a good source of iron
Red meat and green vegetables
Why is calcium and important substance in our diet in relation to our health and body?
Maintains healthy bones and teeth
If we lack calcium in our diet what disease can this cause?
Rickets
Why is iron important in our diet with regard to our body?
Healthy red blood cells
If we don’t have enough iron in our diet this will cause what?
Anaemia

Essential for good eyesight
